Introduction to the International Maritime Organisation:
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by ships.

Introduction to Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW):
The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 was adopted on 7 July 1978 and entered into force on 28 April 1984.

The main purpose of the Convention is to promote safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment by establishing in common agreement international standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers.

Introduction to Basic Safety Training (BST):
SSTCW 1978, as amended and including the requirements of STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) – Chapter VI - Mandatory minimum requirements for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation Training requires that: Before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing ship, other than passengers, shall receive approved familiarisation training in; Personal Survival Techniques – Section A-VI/1-1, Fire Prevention and Firefighting – Section A-VI/1-2, Elementary First Aid – Section A-VI/1-3 and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility – Section A-VI/1-4.

It is also a requirement that seafarers must provide evidence of continuing competence is by completing BST refresher training every 5 years. 

Application:
Mandatory minimum requirements for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation Training before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing ship, other than passengers.

This Basic Safety Training - Training and Assessment Package includes all requirements in accordance with Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention

This Basic Safety training - Training and Assessment Package has been designed and developed in line with IMO Model Courses: Personal Survival Techniques in accordance with Section A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention and has been designed in line with the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.19 – Fire Prevention and Firefighting in accordance with Section A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention and has been designed in line with the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.20 – Elementary First Aid in accordance with Section A-VI/1-3 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention and has been designed in line with the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.13 and Personal Safety and Social Responsibility in accordance with Section A-VI/1-4 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention and has been designed in line with the requirements of IMO Model Course 1.21 under the guidance of the Group ISO 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System (Certificate ID No. SI121620091891) and is delivered and assessed in line with the SEATAG; IADC accredited Workplace Training and Competence Assessment Assurance Programme (Identification No. D1029989).

 

This Training and Assessment Package is made up of four (4) courses making up Basic Safety Training Section A-VI/1 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention

1.    BST-PST-A-1001-1 ........Personal Survival Techniques

2.    BST-FP&FF-A-1001-2....Fire Prevention and Fire FireFighting

3.    BST-EFA-A-1001-3........Elementary First Aid

4.    BST-PSSR-A-1001-4......Personal Safety and Social Responsibility

Target Group

This mandatory minimum requirement course for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation is targeted towards all seafarers who are, or who will be assigned to shipboard duties employed or engaged on a seagoing ship, other than passengers.

This mandatory minimum requirement course for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation is also targeted towards all persons within the offshore oil and gas industry who are, or who will be assigned to shipboard duties employed or engaged on Mobile Offshore Units and/or Mobile Offshore Drilling Units.

Aim of this Training and Assessment Package 

The aim of this Basic Safety Training, Training and Assessment Package is to ensure that the mandatory minimum requirement for safety familiarisation, basic training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/1 Safety Familiarisation is delivered to all within the target group and assessed under the requirements of Table A-VI/1-1, A-VI/1-2, A-VI/1-3 and A-VI/1-4.
