Introduction to the International Maritime Organisation:
The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) – is the United Nations specialised agency with responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine and atmospheric pollution by vessels.  Introduction to Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW): The International Convention on Standards of  Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 was adopted on 7 July 1978 and entered into force on 28 April 1984. The main purpose of the Convention is to promote safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment by establishing in common agreement international standards of training, certification and watchkeeping for seafarers. 

Introduction to Security Awareness Training for all Seafarers (SATAS):
STCW 1978, as amended and including the requirements of STCW 2010 (Manila Amendments) – Chapter VI - Mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A- VI/6-1 Security-related Familiarisation Training requires that: Before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing vessel which is required to comply with the provisions of the ISPS Code, other than passengers, shall receive approved security-related familiarisation training, taking account of the guidance given in part B of the ISPS Code. 

Application:
Mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers. Section A-VI/6-1 Security-related Familiarisation Training requires that: Before being assigned to shipboard duties, all persons employed or engaged on a seagoing vessel which is required to comply with the provisions of the ISPS Code, other than passengers. 

This Vessel Security Training and Assessment Package includes all requirements in accordance with Section A- VI/6 of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention

 

This  Vessel  Security  -  Training  and  Assessment  Package  has  been  designed  and developed  in  line  with  IMO  Model  Courses : Security  Awareness  Training  for  all Seafarers in accordance with  Section A-VI/6  of the STCW Code, as amended, in conjunction with 2010 Manila Convention and has been designed in line with the requirements of IMO Model Course 3.27 and under  the guidance  of the Group  ISO 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System (Certificate ID No. SI121620091891) and  is  delivered  and  assessed  in  line  with  the  SEATAG;  IADC  accredited  Workplace Training  and  Competence  Assessment  Assurance  Programme  (Identification  No. D1029989). 

Target Group

Application: Mandatory minimum requirements for security-related training and instruction for all seafarers. Aim of this Training and Assessment Package 

The aim of this  Vessel Security Training and Assessment Package is to ensure that the mandatory minimum requirement for security familiarisation training and instruction for all seafarers – Section A-VI/6-1 Security Familiarisation is delivered to all within the target group and assessed under the requirements of Table A-VI/6-1. 

Objectives of this Training and Assessment Package 

Those who successfully complete this course should achieve the required standard of competence enabling them to contribute to the enhancement of maritime security through heightened awareness and the ability to recognise security threats and to respond appropriately. This knowledge shall include, but is not limited to: 

  1. The meaning and the consequential requirements of the different security levels;
  2. Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans;
  3. Recognition and detection of weapons, dangerous substances and devices;
  4. Recognition, on a non-discriminatory basis, of characteristics and behavioural patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security; and
  5. Techniques used to circumvent security measures. 

Entry Standard to this Training and Assessment Package

There is no specific entry standard for this course, but it is assumed that those attending this course will be serving seafarers or other shipboard personnel who will not be assigned specific security duties in connection with the Ship Security Plan.
